15-Year-Old Student Allegedly Sh*t Texas High School Teacher Then Fatally Turned the Gun on Himself

The incident occurred at Hill Country College Preparatory High School in Texas on Monday, March 30

A high school in Texas is at the center of an ongoing investigation after a serious incident left a teacher hospitalized and a student dead. Authorities say the situation unfolded on campus and has deeply impacted students, staff, and the wider community.

At around 8:30 a.m. local time on Monday, March 30, deputies responded to reports of a shooting at Hill Country College Preparatory High School, according to a news release shared on the school’s Facebook page.

A teacher was rushed to a San Antonio hospital, having been shot by a 15-year-old male student, who is believed to have then turned the gun on himself, the Comal County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

“We do not know the status of her condition at this time,” said Comal County Sheriff Mark Reynolds of the teacher in a press briefing. “The shooter, a 15-year-old male student, died at the scene.

Sheriff Reynolds emphasized that the incident was “contained” very quickly, while reassuring the community that there is no ongoing threat.

“The student shot the teacher and then, what we believe, and we’re investigating, is that it looks as though the student turned the gun on himself and shot himself,” said Sheriff Reynolds in the press briefing.

Details about the alleged shooter’s relation to the teacher and their identities have not been shared publicly amid an ongoing investigation into the incident. Investigators will also be examining where the student got the firearm from and his motive.

Since opening in 2020, Hill Country College Preparatory High School has been serving approximately 260 students in grades nine through 12, according to News 4 SA.

Students were transported to Bulverde Middle School to reunite with their parents when the school was placed on lockdown amid the shooting, according to the sheriff’s office’s news release. The suspected shooter’s parents were among those in the reunification line, NBC News reported, citing the sheriff.

The school remained closed on Tuesday and will possibly stay shut for the remainder of the week. Counselors have been made available to students and families affected by the shooting, Principal Julie Wiley confirmed in the school’s news release.

“Our hearts are with everyone impacted, especially that teacher, their family, and our school community,” said Principal Wiley, per the news release. “We know this has been a difficult day.

“I want to personally thank our local law enforcement officers, amazing staff, and district administrators for their swift response, professionalism and care of our students,” Wiley continued. “We are deeply grateful to the staff at Bulverde Middle School for hosting our students and staff until they could be reconnected with their families.”

A representative from Hill Country College Preparatory High School and the Comal County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for further comment on Tuesday, March 31.
